A fan in my sons 2yr old Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro was making very loud grinding noises. We dissembled to check for dust and clogged vents but no dice, sounded like the bearings were going out. Next step was to replace the fan and we didn’t want to spend a dime on this out of warranty (many issues since day one) laptop so it’s time for some DIY!

Tools needed
- Torx 5 screwdriver
- Small phillips head screwdriver
Replacement Fans – $8.95 each
- Right side – Yoga 2 Pro Cooling Fan AT0S9001SS0 SUNON EG45040S1-C030

Steps to replace one or both fans
- Turn laptop upside down – place lid on towel to prevent scratching
- Remove all 138 Torx screws that hold the bottom shell in place
- Remove bottom shell – start in a corner and pry, the lid snaps on in places
— - Disconnect the battery from the motherboard – far right ribbon with large connector
- Remove the flexible PCB ribbon – horizontal ribbon at top left of motherboard
- Do not – disconnect the blue ribbons (you can but tricky to reconnect)
— - Disconnect the fan cable – use the blade of a small flathead screw driver
- Remove the two small phillips screws that hold the fan in place
- Remove the mover board screw at the top left corner of the board
— - Gently title back the motherboard until you can easily remove the fan
- Remove tape that holds fan grille to fan body
- Remove Fan
— - Add new fan – re-apply fan grille tape
- Return Motherboard to resting position
- Replace all screws
- Reconnect all ribbons and plugs
- Test fan by turning on laptop before replacing lid – confirm it spins
- Shutdown full and replace lid
- Power up and do something CPU intensive such as Google earth
- If all went well it’s – Fan time!!
Here’s all you need – Fan, Torx 5 screwdriver and a small phillips screwdriver.

@Lee Fram did you end up replacing both fans, or just one? I’m in the same boat: my problem is with the fan that is next to the power port; the sounds it has been making are truly awful.
is there any good way to tell which orientation for the connector to plug the fans back in? It seems like it can go either way.

Is it possible to just replace one of the two fans, without removing the motherboard, etc.? I believe it’s just my right side fan that is making grinding noises. I bought the replacement fans, and it looks like I could remove the right side one and maybe just replace that a lot more simply? It’s attached to the assembly by some black adhesive tape type of stuff, apparently.
